Srinagar – An Uri resident absconding after allegedly causing the death of his sister-in-law on Saturday has surrendered to the police even as protests broke out in the frontier town over the incident.
Syed Shafaat Shah had reportedly punched 17-year-old Maroofa during an argument at his in-laws house, reports said.
The girl had been helping the couple pack for a trip to Delhi where Shafaat worked when they exchanged hot words over some matter, they said.
According to locals Shafaat had fled from the house after the incident.
The couple was having strained relations for some time, and were childless, relatives said.
Lately, Shafaat had been insisting on taking his wife, Shahnaz Fatima, along to Delhi, and the couple were in her parents home in Dammi Sayeedan village, preparing for the journey.
According to the police, the husband has been booked under the 302 of the RPC.
His father, Muhammad Amin Shah, said that Maroofa had not been murdered, but had died of a heart attack during an argument with Shafaat.
She was a heart patient, and suffered a cardiac arrest in the heat of the quarrel, he said, admitting that his son had been having some trouble with his wife. Observer News Service
