By Farooq Chadoo
The Book Kashmir Under The Shadow Of Gun depicts the possibility of the furtive warfare launched by various Kashmiris , especially youth for the liberation of their motherland.
One such operation was the covert efforts of the people under the aegis of Al-Fatah like struggle, which was in vogue the time when resistance struggle against the Israel was going on carried under able commandership of nom de guerre, Yasser Arafat.
Ghulam Rasool Zahgeers ( G.R.Zs) organization, Al- Fatah was not less dynamic but a systematized outfit , launched for freedom of Kashmir having Young Mens League as a political wing. The Students Organization (Young Mens League) started political activities earlier , then Al-Fatah became as its armed wing .
Kashmiris who were associated with Al-Fatah used Young Mens League as a pedestal for continuing the clandestine activities. The book authored by Rao Farman Ali is around Kashmir Watch, reflecting Kashmir dispute , sole motive of Al-Fatah was to further the support from international community for genuine birth right ,right to self determination, through impartial plebiscite with a clear cutline , the complete Independence of Kashmir, albeit, Al-Fatah was not the actual name of the organization, but having a four staged operational strategy besides initial stage , but after being getting exposed in the very initial stage , it is security agencies who named it like this. No matter in the preamble of the organization, in one of the sentences ,there was a special mention [Just like Al-Fatah of Palestine] claimed by author , nevertheless the organizational structure was without ground breaks .
The work available presents Kashmir vis-à-vis armed struggle in a right direction with a clear message of ` changing the lives not living the lives` , which normally had happened in Kashmir and still continues.
The people affiliated with this organization were having commitment, sincerity and above all emancipation of thinking , as per author of the book.
Recast of Maqbool Butt and his comrades has been done in a professional way . There are some stunning revelations about pro-India and some pro- freedom people, which author has dared to touch .
The book analyses the precursor movement with the resultant of mass apprising, which culminated in early 90s of 20th century, which had the deep felt effects on the issue of Kashmir at international level .
The Al-Fatah movement which started as an umbrella organization with concept of launching an indigenous armed struggle to my mind has been researched in detail by the author , every point is mentioned in the book from the viewpoint of various facts revealed and even some recorded in the history of freedom struggle in Kashmir .
The involvement of Plebiscite Front led by Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg, who later turned as the defense counsel for Al-Fatah detainees and his role despite his slackness has also been discussed in an expound manner. To me, the book is another addition to Kashmir Guerrilla Literature. The book offers induct research not only of Al-Fatah but also about some other similar like resistance cells of Kashmir and the author of the book discusses the strategies and other elements which makes it to the stature of great books available on Kashmir conflict, the author encompasses every detail and drafts the situation in such a way that the people understand the real perspective , the way the book is narrated.
The style of narratology gives the book credibility and status of the books like, one written by Master of the Craft.
Indubitably, the book will provide new insight and vision to people with policy institutes, think-tank and most importantly students , the essential t aspect of book is that after very long time, the book of such caliber and credibility has been published.
The author has done masters in English Literature and is self employed , he can be reached at; [email protected]
