SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley on Saturday observed a shutdown on the call of Hurriyat Conference (G) during which scores of persons were injured in violent clashes in the region.
Geelani on Friday called for shutdown in the Valley against the arrest of pro-freedom leaders, killing of youth in Tral and against what he called biased Indian media.
Most of the shops and commercial establishments were closed while educational institutes were also shut. Though the public transport was off the roads in old city but it was plying in Civil Lines. The private vehicles plied normally on all the routes of the city. The government offices and banks witnessed low attendance. The exams were conducted as per schedule by the schools and colleges.
The authorities had deployed additional number of police and paramilitary in sensitive parts of the city to contain protests, sources said.
However, scores of youth took to streets in Gojwara, Nowhatta, Islamia College and Rajouri Kadal, Sekidafar and Hyderpora in uptown and staged anti-India protests. The protesters clashed with government forces during which police fired dozens of teargas shells to disperse the protesters. The clashes continued till evening in these areas leading to tense situation.
A police official said that several people were injured in the clashes including forces personal.
Protesters and forces also clashed in north Kashmirs Palhallan and Sopore area, sources said.

The shutdown was also observed in other parts of the valley on the call of Hurriyat.
