SRINAGAR Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman and Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema patron Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed the fasting month of Ramadhan as full of bounties and rewards for the faithful who fast for the sake of Almighty Allah and its the month in which Almighty Allah distributes his blessings on the faithful directly.
Addressing a religious gathering at Krala Masjid Hawal, Mirwaiz said that while fasting takes the believers closer to Almighty, this holy month also lays emphasis on making the institution of Zakat strong and the believers who have to pay zakat must pay Zakat in this holy month so that poor and downtrodden section of our society get our financial help and support. Mirwaiz said that Zakat is not charity but a religious obligation which we need to fulfill. It is also an act to help free us from excessive desire and greed, learn self-discipline and honesty
Mirwaiz said that it was unfortunate that while Kashmir comprises majority of Muslim population but only few people follow their Islamic duty when it comes to paying Zakat a deed that has been declared compulsory as one of the five pillars of Islam. He said that as Kashmir has large number of orphans, widows and destitute its our Islamic duty to look after them and those who have suffered due to the ongoing oppression across Kashmir over the past 30 years.
