Srinagar: The University of Kashmir will conduct various types of training programmes for all the postal staff in Kashmir region so that the post office functions in a professional manner.
This decision was taken in a joint meeting held between Shri John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General, J&K and Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir today and the training will begin from March, 2013 onwards. The meeting was also attended by many officers of the University including Dean Academic Affairs, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Director NSS and Executive Engineer.
Prof. Talat Ahmad said that the University will be developing the course design for these programmes by involving the faculty members with relevant specializations. He said that the University was much pleased to provide the required training facilities to the post office staff.
Shri John Samuel said that the capacity building of postal staff will be one of the key areas of J&K Postal Circle during this year. This will involve many areas including staff involvement, staff training and staff welfare matters. Post Office has planned for major initiatives to upgrade the post offices from Good to Great.
The staff training and education is one of the key strategies to achieve this. Chief Postmaster General announced that the training will cover key areas including personality development, leadership development, financial management, total quality management, marketing management, customer relationship skills etc. The training programmes will be developed by University of Kashmir and all the staff members of Post Office will undergo the training programmes in a phased manner. In addition, it was decided that a workshop on gender sensitization will be organized by the University of Kashmir for the post office staff.
CPMG announced that apart from training programmes and workshops, the staff will be sent to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore etc. for training on various postal products including Philately, Speed Post, Mail Management, Parcel etc. This will be an exposure-cum-training programme. Special programmes have also been planned for training the postman staff as well as GDS staff. The basic objective is to make the entire work force professional and customer friendly, said Shri John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General.
Meanwhile the Post Office Building at University of Kashmir is being modernized with a view to provide better facilities to the students studying in the University. Chief Postmaster General said that the post office will offer a large range of postal services so that tailor-made services are provided to staff and students from the post office.
Shri Samuel said that the Department is planning to make the post offices into a highly professional and modern units through four key strategies, namely staff development, customer focus and IT systems. He said that Kashmir will get special focus in the development of postal services considering the fact that the people have placed enormous faith in the post office.
Pertinently, during the last year as a major initiative, Srinagar GPO was made a Night Post Office and Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Lal Bazar, Pampore, SK Gund, Dooru Post Offices were modernized. This has resulted in huge confidence from the public in the Postal Services of J&K. He said that during this year, the Department will be focusing in the infrastructural development of Srinagar GPO, Lal Chowk, Karan Nagar, Chadoora, Verinag, Qazigund, Pulwama, Tangmarg, Magam, Gulmarg, Bandipora and Ganderbal Post Offices
