New DelhiGovernor NN Vohra who has been at the helm for last nine years in troubled Kashmir, is reportedly unhappy with the handling of situation by the centre and wants to quit office.
NDTV, quoting unnamed people who work closely with him reported that Vohra (81) has been unhappy with the handling by both the centre and the state of the Kashmir Valley since the killing in July 2016 of (Hizb commander) Burhan Wani, which triggered year long unrest.
According to this report, Governor Vohra on Monday told Home Minister Rajnath Singh that he would like to resign.
However Rajiv Mehrishi, the most senior bureaucrat in the Home Ministry, who media reports suggested, was Mr Vohras replacement, described such reports as incorrect.
But sources who asked not to be named told NDTV that Vohra, whose second term as Governor of the troubled state began in April 2013, was asked by the centre to remain in office because a replacement for him has not been identified.
Earlier Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also met with the Home Minister in Delhi and the Governor’s possible exit was reportedly discussed.
Vohra was first appointed in 2008 by the Congress-led government as Jammu and Kashmir’s first civilian governor in nearly two decades. Before that, he served as the centre’s interlocutor of representative in the state and held talks with different stakeholders on establishing peace and fostering development.
Last month, there were newspaper reports of him sending his resignation in writing to the centre; the Financial Express reported he could be replaced by Home Secretary Mehrishi who is to retire at the end of this month as a bureaucrat.
Mehrishi scotch rumours of becoming JK Governor
Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi today scotched rumours that he would be the next Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, saying he would be going to his home town Jaipur tomorrow (Thursday) on his retirement.
“I will be going to Jaipur tomorrow noon,” he told PTI when asked whether there is a possibility of him becoming the next governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
He also said he has no information on the possibility of present governor N N Vohra putting in his papers ahead of the completion of his second term a few months later.
Mehrishi, a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre officer IAS officer, will demit office tomorrow.
There have been speculations that Mehrishi may be appointed as governor.
