Srinagar- Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Friday extended the tenure of Vice Chancellor of SKUAST Kashmir for a period of two years and Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu (JU) for a period of three years respectively.
Sinha in an order said that the incumbent VC of SKUAST Kashmir Prof Nazir Ganaie shall continue his services for two more years with effect from December-16 which is his existing term of the position.
“I exercise of the powers vested in me, under Section 25 (2) of Sher-I-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Act, 1982, I, Manoj Sinha, Chancellor, SKUAST Kashmir hereby extend the tenure of Prof Nazir Ganaie, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Kashmir for a period of two years with immediate effect from 16.12.2024, the date of completion of his existing term as the Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Kashmir,” it reads
Another order reads, “In exercise of the powers vested in me, under Section 12 (5) of The Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969, I, Manoj Sinha, Chancellor, University of Jammu, hereby re-appoint Prof Umesh Rai, as the Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, for a term of three years with immediate effect 05.04.2025, the date of completion of his existing term as the Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu.”
Prof Ganaie’s tenure has been marked by significant achievements in the agricultural sector, particularly in drafting the holistic agriculture development program for J&K, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming the region’s agricultural landscape. His leadership at SKUAST Kashmir has been instrumental in the launch of 55 student-driven start-ups and the registration of 42 patents. He also drafted a new agriculture education model which became the national model of agri-education.
Meanwhile, Prof. Umesh Rai is widely regarded as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship. Under his leadership, Jammu University has transformed into a hub of innovation, becoming a model institution for the implementation of the National Education Policy across the Union Territory. Prof. Rai introduced the groundbreaking “Design Your Own Degree” model, which has been adopted by universities across the country and within Jammu and Kashmir.
Prof. Rai’s contributions extend beyond the classroom, with his initiatives such as the “College on Wheels” and “Igniter” – aYouth Startup Yatra, providing invaluable opportunities for students to engage in entrepreneurship and innovation. His work in setting up the ‘Skills, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship Centre’ at JU has been pivotal in fostering a startup ecosystem, positioning the university as a leader in incubation and innovation.
Both Vice Chancellors have received extensions in recognition of their remarkable leadership and the transformative impact they have had on their respective institutions.
