Shopian – Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, . Taj Mohi-ud-din today said the historic Shah Khul in Shopian district is being augmented and improved upon for which the project cost is expected to be Rs. 5.95 crores. He said the project is going to be kicked off soon.
Addressing a public meeting at Sedov village here today, the Minister said the canal would prove to be a harbinger of economic prosperity to the Shopian district and adjoining areas. He said the economy of area would get a new thrust once water is available for irrigating the whole area.
The Minister said the capacity of canal would be 45 cusecs though at present only 10 to 12 cusecs of water have been released only on trial run. He said all plain and karewa land in the area would get irrigation facilities once the canal is fully operationalized.
Taj reiterated the commitment of the government to provide drinking and irrigation water facility to all areas in the state. He said besides the present distribution networks (both drinking water and irrigation) is being strengthened and improved upon.
Responding to the local demands, the Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner Shopian to visit Shahkote to explore the possibility of bringing it on the tourist map of the State. He said he would take up the matter of up-gradation of local high school with the concerned authorities. He said he would also take up the matter of providing play ground in the village with the concerned Minister.
Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, . Javed Jafferi, Deputy Commissioner Shopian and other officers and engineers accompanied the Minister during the visit.
