AAI Clarifies After Omar’s Day Light Robbery Charge
Srinagar- Some 41 flights arriving and departing from Srinagar International Airport were cancelled on Wednesday following heavy overnight snowfall while major roads including Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for vehicular movement.
However, the local Met office here has predicted gradual improvement in weather conditions from Thursday and forecast no major wet spell till the end of February month.
According to Director Srinagar International Airport, Kuldeep Singh all 41 flights scheduled to and fro Srinagar were cancelled today.
He said that the passengers will be adjusted in the forthcoming flights in the next available flight.
Moreover, all the major roads including the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for the traffic due to fresh snowfall since last evening.
The men and machinery have, however, been pressed to clear the roads, but the operation continued till late hours as the intermittent snowfall continued till later afternoon.
The decision to close the roads for traffic was taken as a precautionary measure due to the slippery conditions triggered by fresh snowfall.
As per the official statement, the vehicular movement on Jammu-Srinagar highway will remain suspended tomorrow due to huge landslide at Cafeteria Morh, continuous shooting stones at many places between Ramban and Banihal and snow accumulation between NAVYUG tunnel and Qazigund.
The officials appealed to people not to undertake any journey on Jammu-Srinagar highway tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the other roads including Mughal Road, SSG road and Kishtwar-Sinthan Road were also closed for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation.
However, Director Meteorological department (MeT), Sonum Lotus said that the weather conditions have improved since afternoon.
He, however, said that there is a possibility of gradual improvement in weather conditions from tomorrow.
“There is no forecast of any major snowfall till the end of February month,” Lotus said.
Meanwhile after former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the “sudden” hike in fare rates for cancelled flights and called it a “day light robbery”, Airport Authority of India said options for refund and rescheduling at “no extra cost” has been offered by the airlines.
“The options for refund and rescheduling at no extra cost for all the flights cancelled today has been offered by all airlines. The affected passengers may please contact the respective airlines call centre for refund or rescheduling,” Airport Authority of India said in a tweet.
The AAI was responding to a tweet by Omar Abdullah: “This is how passengers to Srinagar are getting shafted by airlines – all flights got cancelled today & people who had paid Rs 3000/4000 for their seats are told to rebook. Suddenly the same flights are being quoted at Rs 12,000/ Rs 14,000. Day light robbery & no government intervenes.”
