Woman Among 4 Held For Running Fake Marriage Racket

Srinagar- Police on Friday claimed to have busted inter district fraud marriage racket by arresting four of its members in Kunzer area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The accused were operating as middlemen during marriage functions, a police spokesperson said Friday.

He further said that the accused used WhatsApp to send photos of various young women, falsely claiming they were ready for marriage.

“These individuals convinced the victims on the other side to agree to marriage proposals, fix the Mehar money and make payments. However, despite financial transactions no marriages were conducted and the money was not returned,” the spokesperson said.

Giving more details, he said, it has been revealed that this group of fraudsters manipulated their victims by selecting targets through carefully chosen photographs of young women.

“They managed to accumulate a significant sum of Rs 7,38000 from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of Mehar payments and commission,” he added.

The police identified them as Laal Hussain and Irshada Begum of Rajouri, Ab Rahman Rather and Ab Khaliq Dar, both residents of Budgam.

The spokesperson said that a case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“Investigation was initiated immediately, leading to unearthing of the entire fraudulent operation. As of now, four individuals have been apprehended in connection with this case,” he added.
