Tehran- Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on 29 May as part of the first visit by an Omani leader to the Islamic Republic since 2013.

During their talk, Raisi said that the policy of openness shared between the two countries “will serve to strengthen relations” and cited the progress achieved in developing economic ties by including investment opportunities.

He also said the two countries have “high potential” to enhance cooperation in new fields such as industry, trade, communications, defense, financial and monetary exchanges, and energy.

For his part, Sultan bin Tariq highlighted the importance of increased mutual trade exchanges since the last visit of Raisi to Muscat in May 2022.

After meeting with the Iranian president, Bin Tariq was hosted by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who told the Omai leader that Tehran welcomes better diplomatic relations with Egypt, according to state media.

As part of Bin Tariq’s visit, four new deals were signed to improve energy, investment, and free economic zoning cooperation.

On Sunday evening, the foreign ministers of both countries attended a press conference where Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced the signing of a major strategic cooperation agreement between Tehran and the Sultanate.

Amir-Abdollahian stressed the importance of the Ashgabat agreement, saying, “Of the matters most important to both countries, transportation is on the top list of priorities.”

The delegations also signed an agreement to form a joint investment committee between Muscat and Tehran.

One year ago, on 23 May, Raisi made a trip to Oman during a visit in which 12 memoranda of understanding (MoU) were signed. Muscat also played a mediating role in indirect talks between Iran and the US to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

At the time, Oman expressed interest in importing gas from Iran by building an offshore pipeline connecting both countries. The construction of the pipeline began this year.
