Srinagar- Amid the buzz that the government plans to build a cancer hospital or a sports stadium on 70 kanals of Eidgah land in Downtown Srinagar, Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti Friday said that why to touch the land used for congregational prayers and why not to use the vast ‘Tatoo Ground’ land for the same purpose.
“It is not feasible to have a cancer hospital in a populated area. It will have harmful effects and the other thing is that it is obligatory for the government to take Muslim Clerics on board before taking any decision,” Mehbooba told reporters in Srinagar.
She said that if the government of India is too serious to build a hospital or a playfield then it has ‘Tatoo Ground’ and it can use that land. “Why target Eidgah which is the congregational place for Muslims who offer Eid prayers there,” she said.
Mehbooba Mufti said that the government forgets the fact that Eidgah land has been allocated to Muslims for prayers. “It is important to talk to Muslim community first,” she said and reiterated that ‘Tatoo Ground’ can be used to build a hospital or for the development of a world-class sports stadium.
It bears mention that Tatoo Ground, spread around 1000 kanals of land near Bemina Crossing, has been under army occupation for several decades.
After more than a decade-long tussle between the Army and the previous civilian governments over who owns the Tattoo ground, the two sides had agreed to jointly develop a park there. The park was being developed on 17 acres of prime land vacated by the army in the middle of a 200 acre military garrison during Mehbooba Mufti rule.
