Teenager Drowns During Clashes In Magam

Srinagar- A teenager died of drowning on Friday in Kawoosa area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district when the area was witnessing clashes between government forces and protesters over the killing of militant commander Muhammad Yusuf Kantroo.

According to reports, 17-year-old Shabbar Hussain Mir, a resident of Gund Hasibhat, Lawaypora, Srinagar jumped into Sukhnag Nallah in Kawoosa village near Magam on Friday afternoon when government forces were chasing a group of protesting youth.

Eyewitnesses said the boy jumped in the river but was unable to swim to safety and drowned.

After hours of search, reports said, the teenager’s body was retrieved by residents and taken to his native place for burial. Shabbar was laid to rest amid tears and sobs as the entire neighbourhood had assembled there to mourn his loss.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here this evening, a police spokesperson said that Budgam Police is enquiring into the circumstances which lead to the drowning of the individual.

“The dead body was fished out from the stream by the locals and was taken to his native place for last rites,” the spokesperson added.
