Cop Killed, 4 Security Men Injured In Bandipora Attack

Srinagar- A policeman was killed while four other security personnel, including an ASI of Border Security Force (BSF) were injured on Friday in a grenade attack by militants in Bandipora town of north Kashmir.

Around 5pm Friday, unidentified militants hurled a grenade towards a checkpoint manned jointly by police and BSF near Nishat Park area in the north Kashmir township of Bandipora, a police spokesperson said. In the grenade attack, he said, four policemen and a BSF officer received splinter injuries.

All the injured, the police spokesperson said, were evacuated to the hospital for treatment. However, one of the policeman identified as Zubair Ahmad succumbed to his injuries. The condition of other injured security personnel is stable.

The injured have been identified as Head Constable Mohammad Shafi of Sonamarg, and constables Mohammad Yasir and Rayees Ahmad. The injured BSF ASI has been identified as Umesh Singh.

The killed policeman, according to the reports, had got engaged around four months ago. He was the youngest in his family and is survived by his parents and elder brother.

Soon after the attack, the area was cordoned off and a search operation launched to nab the attackers.

“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime,” he added.

Friday attack in Bandipora town comes almost two months after militants shot dead two policemen in an audacious broad daylight attack on December 10 last year.

The two policemen Mohammad Sultan and Fayaz Ahmad were killed in an ambush by militants in the busy Gulshan Chowk in the main town Bandipora.

A week later, police claimed to have killed Pakistani militant Safiulla alias Abu Khalid involved in the killing of the two cops, besides a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, his brother and father in the north Kashmir district, in an overnight encounter in Harwan area of this capital city.

Meanwhile, National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah have condemned the grenade attack.

“Violence in any of its manifestations is always unacceptable and will yield nothing except further death and destruction. The vicious cycle of death has caused much loss to human lives in J&K while devastating the socio-economic conditions of the people during the last over three decades. My heartfelt sympathies are with the kin of the slain cop. I pray for the fast recovery of all injured," Farooq said.

Condemning the attack, Omar Abdullah said, “I unequivocally condemn the cowardly act of violence. I send my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the slain cop. I also pray for the speedy recovery of all those who have sustained injuries,"

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) also condemned the grenade attack on the police party.

In a statement issued here, a party spokesperson termed the attack on police personnel as a shameful act, saying another family has been devastated.

JKPCC expressed profound grief over the loss of police official and conveyed deepest condolences to bereaved family and prayed for speedy recovery of injured personnel.
