Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested popular religious preacher Sarjan Barkati from his residence at Reban, Shopian in South Kashmir.

His wife Shabroza Akhter confirmed that Barkati was arrested by Zainapora police from his residence on Saturday morning.

Barkati was arrested, two days after delivering Eid speech, in his native village on Thursday, for the first time after his release last year.

Residents said that he was on the stage for just a few minutes in which he talked about the situation in Palestine and denounced Israeli regime for its crimes against innocent people.

A police official from Zainapora police station told Kashmir Observer that Barkati wasn’t arrested for his speech against Israel. He said Barakati was arrested for making “provocative statements” during his speech.

He however said they haven’t registered any FIR against him yet.

When contacted SSP Shopian Amrit Pal Singh told Kashmir Observer that Barkati has been taken into “Preventive custody”.

Barkati was released in the last week of October 2020 after remaining in jail for over four years.
