Srinagar- Two militants were killed in an encounter in Sopore area of north Kashmir on Tuesday, police said.
State forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nathipora area of Sopore after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire at a search party of the forces, who retaliated.
Two militants were killed, the official said, adding that the search operation is still going on.
Earlier, Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said that a foreign militant involved in killing two councillors and a cop was among those trapped in the encounter.
Two councillors namely Reyaz Ahmad Peer and Shamasdin Peer besides policeman Shafqat Nazir Khan were killed in Sopore in a militant attack on March 29 earlier this year.
