SRINAGAR – An army man and a special police officer (SPO) on Tuesday were killed in a fierce gun-battle with militants in Khrew area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
In the early hours today, Army’s 50 RR, special operations group (SOG) police and the troops of CRPF 185 battalion laid a siege around Zantrag area of Khrew after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area, officials said. When the joint team launched search operation, the militants hiding in the area opened indiscriminate fire towards the government forces in a bid to escape from their dragnet.
In the exchange of gunfire, SPO Shahbaz Ahmad of Rajouri was killed while an Army man was injured. Later, the solider succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said that the siege around the area has been further strengthened to prevent militants from fleeing. The search operation, they said has been put on hold for the night.
On Monday, three Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including a former policeman were killed in a fierce encounter with government forces in Wacchi area of Shopian.
