SRINAGAR Eleven families in Poonch were plunged into grief and shock after their young members, studying in a private computer institute, died in an accident on Mughal road on Thursday.
Official sources said seven other students were also injured when a picnic vehicle (Tempo traveler) they were on board skidded off the road and fell in a gorge near Peer Ki Gali along Mughal road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian district.
According a police official, soon after receiving a call about the accident on Thursday afternoon, teams were rushed to the spot and when they reached, they found that the vehicle was mangled along a ravine and locals had reached the spot.
All those boarding the vehicle were removed and taken to local hospital in Shopian. 11 students, nine of them girls, were declared brought dead and seven injured were provided first aid before being removed to the SMHS in Srinagar for advanced treatment. Two among the students, from a private computer institute at Surankote Poonch, were stated to eb critical when this report was filed.

The officials identified the deceased as Nayeema (25) daughter of Reyaz Ahmad of Faisalabad, Tabasum (23) daughter of Mohammad Rafiq of Faisalabad, Shereen Fatima (24) daughter of Zaman Ahmad of Lathoon, Afshana Kownsar(23) of Darbah, Humaira Qazmi (25) of Dundak, Rehmat Bee (23) of Dundak, Najma (20) of Lassana, Shabnum (22) of Gunthal, Rabia (20) of Gunthal, Jameel Ahmad (24) of Mandi and Suhail Ahmad (20) of Gunthal.
He identified the injured as Aliya (20) daughter of Mohd Iqbal of Surankote, Tabasum (21) daughter of Bashir Ahmad, Soniya (22) daughter of Mohd Rafiq of Faisalabad, Tazeem Akther (25) daughter of Abdul Rashid, Jameel Ahmad (21) son of Abdul Rehman of Surankote, Mehrun Nisa (20) and Afshana Javid (24).
Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and in his condolence message, he conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased, an official spokesman said.
Governor directed the administration to provide best medical treatment to the injured in the accident and wished speedy recovery to them, the spokesman added.
National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah vice president Omar Abdullah, President of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement (JKPM), Dr Shah Faesal, PI (M) leader and former MLA Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami also expressed shock over the deaths in the tragic deaths.
Hurriyat Conference Chairmen Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic deaths.
They expressed condolences with bereaved families especially the parents of the deceased prayed for the early recovery of other injured in the incident. They also expressed regret over the loss of precious lives in accidents on daily basis.
