Dr. Hanif Qureshi (IPS) was the Commissioner of Police, Faridabad, Haryana before taking over as Chief Executive Officer of Haryana Wakf Board.
Dr Qureshi did his M.Tech, MBA and later Ph.D. (Criminal Justice) from the University of Cincinnati, USA.
Haryana Wakf Board under the leadership of Dr Qureshi established the Mewat Engineering College (MEC) at Nuh, Haryana in 2010 with a vision to provide excellence in technical education, meet the growing demands of industries in the future and benefit the society as a whole. MEC is a private institution affiliated to Gurugram University and recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and the Government of Haryana.
In an exclusive interview with Kashmir Observer Dr Qureshi spoke at length about MEC and prospectus for students from Kashmir there.

There are more than 3,500 engineering colleges in India. Why should one choose MEC?
Mewat is located close to the fast-developing area of Delhi NCR. The industrial areas are near MEC. This is one of the reasons why MEC has been able to tie up with companies like Honda Motors, Sukam Inverters, Suvastika Solar, Sledgehammer and others. The faculty of MEC is fully qualified and its students have achieved top positions in Haryana State. Besides, there is good hostel facility available. The college has a large library with ample books and a large reading hall.
Mewat is an underdeveloped region. How is the social life like?
The MEC has a campus life of its own. There are sports facilities, gym, library, canteen and vast open green spaces. In district Mewat there are other institutions like a medical college, Girls college, polytechnics and others. Urban centres like Gurgaon and Faridabad are close by.
How is the college spirit at MEC like? Does it have music and sports clubs, swimming pools and any other means of entertainment?
There are indoor sports, outdoors sports like cricket, volleyball etc. The college organizes regular programs like Kavi Sammelan, Mushaira, cultural fests, freshers and farewell parties. It has an environment club, cultural club, debating club and avenues for social service and skill development including soft skills
Can you tell us something about campus resources like labs, libraries, sports infra. Do you have smart classrooms?
The labs in MEC are one of the best in the region. The labs of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics and Computer Science are manned by senior professors and assisted by qualified lab attendants. All are approved by AICTE. There is a large central library. Four smart class rooms are being completed in MEC in the current session.
The College has partnered with Reliance and Jio wifi is being installed in the entire campus. All students of MEC can borrow books from the book bank available in the library.

Tell us something about hostel accommodation. Do you serve Halal food and what are the medical facilities available at the campus?
Halal food is available at the hostel mess. The boys hostel has a capacity of about 300 students and girls hostel about 30. Medical facilities are available. There is a doctor on call in the medical room and the district hospital is also nearby. There is a dining hall located on the ground floor of the hostel. The mess is run by a student committee where they have a choice to determine the menu.
How would you rate the MEC faculty, like qualification levels and past performance of the departments?
The faculty is qualified and competent. They engage with the students, be it on academic matters or on educational and cultural tours. All Assistant and Associate Professors are minimum M Tech and many are pursuing PhD.All professors are PhD with experience in respective fields. The engagement of Faculty with industry keeps their knowledge upto date.
Do students need to pass any common entrance test or any college-specific entrance test for admissions?
The candidates are required to pass JEE mains all India exam. However, if JEE qualified candidates are not available, MEC recruits on basis of class 12 marks also.
Do you offer any financial aid or scholarships for meritorious and poor students?
Students with more than 80% marks in class 12 get a 100% tuition fee waiver (for the first year) and those with 75% get a 75% tuition fee waiver. Out of 39,500 fee for boys, Rs. 20,000 is the tuition fee. Besides there are other scholarships available from Ministry of Minority affairs, GOI and other sources.
Are there any industry tie ups of MEC
MEC has established a solar energy research lab in partnership with Sukam Solar. The other is an automobile research lab established by Honda Motors. The College will shortly sign partnerships with sledgehammer and ACE Ltd.
Is there any scheme for diploma students?
Candidates who have passed 3-year Diploma in Engineering can seek admission directly in 2nd year of the B Tech program through Lateral Entry Scheme (LEET). The merit is decided by the Diploma marks.

What about transport facility for students?
The college maintains its fleet of buses for student transport. They are used for travel to nearby areas of Mewat, Gurgaon and Faridabad and also for tours of students.
Does MEC provide On/Off campus recruitment services to facilitate placement of outgoing students?
The placement cell of MEC has successfully placed students in several companies in the past. MEC offers assistance in internship as well as placements. Soft skill development courses are also run by the placement cell. CV making and personality development are included in the activities by the Placement cell.
