KU To Host Book Fair For Promotion Of Urdu, Reading Habits  


SRINAGAR — In an attempt to promote reading habits and Urdu language, NCPUL (National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language), in collaboration with Kashmir University will be organizing a book fair in Kashmir University for over a week from 15 of June to 23 of June. The NCPUL is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Department of Higher Education.

The Book Promotion manager of the NCPUL, S.M Khurram said, “This is our 23rd such mela where we will be putting up stalls and organizing literary and cultural events for the promotion of Urdu as a language, which is fast dying as a language in the entire nation.” NCPUL is the biggest organization formed for the promotion of Urdu. So far, the NCPUL has published 350 books, with about 50 books every year since its formation. According to Khurram, NCPUL is a bigger publishing house than any other, even in Pakistan, where the official language itself is Urdu. “We don’t just publish books, we also ensure that people read them by promoting them with such events.”

G.M. Peerzada, director of Allama Iqbal Library at Kashmir University said, “This book fair will be a collaboration of many subjects, organizations. Kashmir University have invited many schools and colleges to join us in the event.”

 “We are aware of the fact that the new generation runs after the internet but it’s important to make them understand the cultural importance of books. We must keep the heritage of books intact,” Khurram said.

 The book fair will have 86 stalls and 51 book publishers participating from all over India. There will be books on several subjects such as science, psychology, history available in Urdu. Moreover, students will get a discount ranging from 40-70% on the books for sale. Besides the stalls, there will also be a line-up of several cultural and literary programs.

On 16th of June, students from various programs to promote the language run by NCPUL will be felicitated with their degrees, in the presence of the VC of Central university of Kashmir, Mehraj-ud-Din Mir.

The book fair will be inaugurated by the Kashmir University Vice Chancellor Talat Ahmad and will be joined by former Chief Minister of J&K Farooq Abdullah and some local MP’s as guests.

Farhuma Iqbal, an RJ with Big FM said, “I hope  the event sees a large participation of people.” 92.7 BIG FM is one of the media partners of the book fair.
