SRINAGAR Muslims across Jammu and Kashmir would celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival of thanksgiving, on Wednesday to mark the culmination of the holy month of Ramazan.
The moon was sighted in the region and soon Kashmir’s Grand Mufti took to radio and television to announce Eid on Wednesday.
The central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan announced Eid on June 5 after testimonies were received from different parts of the country. Likewise in New Delhi Shahi Imam Ahmad Bukhari too announced moon sighting.
Thousands of people are expected to attend congregational Eid prayers in Eidgahs, Masjids and Shrines across the State where scholars and clerics would throw light on the significance of the festival of thanksgiving.
The biggest gathering of devotees is expected at historical Jamia Masjid Srinagar and Hazratbal shrine on city outskirts.
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is scheduled to address people ahead of Eid prayers at 9 am while Eid prayers are scheduled to be offered there at 10 am.
Meanwhile, governor Satya Pal Malik, his advisors, chief secretary and others besides NC leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abadullah have conveyed heartiest congratulations to people of Jammu and Kashmir on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Governor has prayed to the Almighty to keep the humanity firm in its faith and good deeds and bless people with a good life. He has expressed hope that this auspicious occasion would be the harbinger of peace, progress, prosperity and happiness and would strengthen the bonds of communal harmony, brotherhood and amity, which are the hallmarks of J&Ks glorious pluralistic traditions.
Advisor to Governor and Chairman, J&K Muslim Wakf Board/Wakf Council, Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, prayed that Almighty Allah reward Rozadars with His bounties and mercy.
Advisor to Governor, K. Vijay Kumar in a message of felicitation described the festival as a reward from Almighty Allah. He said celebrating Eid teaches us camaraderie, friendship, mutual respect and love for the masses. He appealed people to remember their neighbours, orphans and the needy during Eid celebrations.
Kumar also prayed for peace, progress and prosperity in the State.
Advisor to Governor, K. K. Sharma in a message said celebrating Eid ul Fitr teaches us concepts of camaraderie, friendship, mutual respect and love for the destitute and downtrodden. He hoped the festival brings peace, prosperity and happiness to the people of the State.
Sharma also appealed people to remember their neighbours, orphans and the needy during Eid celebrations.
The Advisor to Governor K Skandan said that the festival of Eid is a celebration of the spirit of sharing and brotherhood while praying for the peace, progress, prosperity and happiness of the State and its people.
The Advisor, in his message, extended his greetings and good wishes to people on the holy occasion.
Chief Secretary B.V.R Subhramanyam said that the festival marks the culmination of Ramazan – the month of intense devotion, worship, blessings and forgiveness. Ramadhan gives an opportunity to mould and develop ones character and symbolizes rededicating the self to the spirit of compassion, peace, patience and discipline, he said.
Eid is a manifestation of the spirit of Ramazan. It is a commemoration that marks solidarity through special prayers, sympathy for the poor, needy and the less fortunate and forgiveness as a reward to those who observe the obligatory fast for the month.
On the occasion, Chief Secretary prayed for prosperity and happiness to the people of in the state.

Prior to Eid prayers Mirwaiz Umar Farooq would shed light on the philosophy of Eid ul-Fitr in his sermon which will commence at 9:00 am.
AAJ has urged the people to participate in the Ijtima in large numbers to express unity and maintain discipline.
