RTI Activist Says Father ‘Harassed’ At Official’s Behest

SRINAGAR — A Right To Information (RTI) activist from Magam area has alleged that his father was  harassed on Friday by “two local goons” in the main market at the behest of a Municipal Committee Magam official.

J&K RTI Foundation in a statement said its branch office Magam had filed an RTI application related to public issues including dumping site of Municipal Committee located on Ferozpora river bank at Magam.

“The application was filed in the office of Executive Officer Municipal Committee Magam by Chairman J&K RTI Foundation Er. Irfan Banka which was not replied on time by the PIO and the case proceedings are going on since then in the State Information Commission who is the 2nd Appellate Authority under State RTI Act,” the statement said.

A notice has been issued to the PIO, municipal Committee Magam to appear before the State Information Commission with relevant documents on May 14, 2019,  for hearing of the complaint under J&K RTI Act 2009.

“This infuriated the officials who went and caused breach of harmony in the society. In the process, local goons were mislead which lead to the physical harrasment of Nissar Ahmad Banka father of RTI activist Er. Irfan Banka,” the statement said.

“Unfortunately, to hide the realities, an employee namely Fayaz Ahmad had mislead these goons  with wrong facts regarding RTI Application filed against them. The application was related to the issues because of Municipal Committee Magam and these goons were nowhere in the debate. They unnecessarily harassed and mandhandled my father at Magam inside his business unit. The physical harassment was based on the reporting by the employee of Municipal Committee Magam who has misused his official position. J&K RTI Foundation had held a protest in 2018 against dumping issue of Magam which remained unaddressed by the authorities on ground level since last many years. Complaint against the employees creating problems against RTI Applicants has been filed in the police station Magam and the SHO Magam has assured action “ said Irfan Banka RTI activist.
