South Kashmir: PDP Activist Shot At, Injured In Bijbehara

SRINAGAR — A Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) activist was shot at and injured by suspected militants on Saturday evening at Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district going to polls on Tuesday.

Reports said that the gunmen fired upon Abdul Qayoom Pandith (54) son of Ghulam Mohidin Pandith outside his home at Jablipora area of Bijbhera. Pandith received a bullet wound in his leg and was removed to hospital.

A police officer said that Pandith, a contractor by profession, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Sources, however, said that Pandith was later referred to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.

Soon after the incident, the government forces launched searches in the area to nab the assailants.

Meanwhile, a militant who was killed on Friday late night in an encounter with government forces at Watergam area of Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was buried in Gantamullah area on Saturday evening.

Reports said that the militant’s body was handed over to members of local Auqaf at Gantamullah area of Baramulla after completing all medico-legal formalities.

The slain was later buried at Gantamullah near river bank along the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, they said.

A police officer also confirmed that the slain was buried in the area.

Army on Friday night has claimed to have killed the unknown militant in a brief shootout in Watergam. The army had also claimed to have recovered a pistol and three grenades from the slain.
