Srinagar: A young man asking New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to embrace Islam has gone viral on social media sparking debate on freedoms Muslims enjoy in the Western world.

“To be honest with you, what brought me here it’s you. I have been crying every day for the last three days. I have been making one Dua from Allah and I said I wish other leaders can look at your leadership skills. And my other one wish is I hope one day you enter into Islam and I wish I will be with you in Jannah.”  Upon which, Miss Ardern replied, “Islam teaches humanity and I think I have it.”

Soon after the Christchurch attack, Prime Minister Ardern addressed the Parliament and the first words of her speech were ‘Assalam o Alaikum’ (Peace be upon you). Similarly, for the first time in history of New Zealand, a Muslim cleric was invited into the Parliament to recite Holy Quran.

Reacting to the viral video, a Kashmiri netizen Shabbir Hussain wrote on his facebook wall: “Overzealous Muslims like this… need to be spoken to.  It insults the intelligence and choice of a person when you walk up to them and ask them to renounce their belief or faith and convert to Islam. Especially when they’ve been as supportive of you, in your times of despair and tragedy, as this beautiful human being, Jacinda Ardern”. He further wrote, “It’s so uncouth, insensitive and condescending.  More so when you know how aggressive, infuriated and violent Muslims get when they’re asked to convert”.

Mir Laeeq, another user posted this: “Sadly, this seemingly innocent and sincere gesture is nothing but a reflection of strange mix of ignorance and arrogance which has become widespread among Muslims. As if these guys are sure of their place in paradise, this is sheer conceit and extreme bad manners to say the least”.

“Making a fool of himself. She is obviously a superior human being than the person who is inviting”, wrote Shawl Zulkarnain .

According to M Baran SH: “She (Miss Arden ) did not do all what she did to do it for Muslims, she did it because she is a wise leader and wants to keep her country safe. She sent a clear message to perpetrators that their actions would serve the opposite of what their aim is”

“Please stop preaching and start practicing,” posted Ahsan Malik in response to the video.

Although the entire political leadership of New Zealand has expressed their solidarity with the Muslim community after the Christchurch mosques shooting but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s handling of the situation and her empathy after the attack has won praises all over the world.

Soon after this barbaric incident, Ardern sent her apologies to the victims’ families for not being able to protect them, and then the next day the world saw her wearing Muslim dress while meeting the families of the victims.

She did everything possible to provide relief to grieving families, and then her speech on the floor of Parliament, where she refused to name the terrorist, was spectacular. She said the terrorist did this just to get fame and she would not let him achieve that aim. Her words were: “We in New Zealand will give him nothing, not even his name.”

Then came the move that may have ashamed the Republicans and Democrats in the US, and other global leaders as well. Ardern immediately announced a ban on semi-automatic military-style weapons.

“From wearing a headscarf to meet the grieving families to not naming the terrorist to amending the gun laws, she has shown the world how a true leader acts in a time of crisis. There has been hardly any leader who after such a barbaric act could control the damage. Ardern, unlike George W Bush or Donald Trump, did not threaten any foreign country. She simply acknowledged that there was a terrorist attack and in order to avoid incidents like these in the future, instead of optics she took practical measures,” wrote columnist Imad Zafar.
