SRINAGAR Three persons died due to cold after they were caught in a snowstorm in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said on Tuesday.
A group of people were moving on foot from Kupwara to Karnah when they were caught in a snowstorm near Khoni Nallah in Sadhna Top mountain pass area in north Kashmir on Monday night, a police official said.
Three people went missing while others managed to reach Sadhna Top and informed the police and the army about the incident. When the security forces reached the spot, they found three persons had died due to cold, the official said.
The deceased were identified as Tahir Younis Khawaja (22) son of Mohammad Younis, Abdul Khaliq Sheikh (40) son of Ghulam Qadir, both residents of Hajinard Karnah and Fareed Ahmad (25) son of Laldin of Shams Pora, Karnah.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar said that the trio died due to severe cold.
Meanwhile, the deceased were buried at their respective native villages after people carried their bodies.
The local residents of Karnah sector also staged a protest demonstration against the government for not taking measures to construct the tunnel announced during assembly sessions.
“So far we have only get assurances but nothing concrete happened on ground. We again request the government to construct the tunnel as early as possible so as to prevent the frequent tragedies either due to natural calamities or due to road mishaps,” the residents said.
The residents said that they will be forced to cross over to Pakistan administered Kashmir if the government fails to construct the tunnel.
The road from Kupwara to Karnah remains closed for traffic movement due to bad weather.
