NEW DELHI There is a certain division in the country when it comes to sports. Due to the difference in sports policies & operations per state, there lies a conflict as to which authority should take up the initiative of promoting sports, building a culture and creating infrastructure for the growth of sports in India. As our Sporting bodies feel a bit uncomfortable about not being able to host Olympic qualification events in India, unless we give the International Olympic Committee, a written guarantee, granting visas to all, its time to ask ourselves as to why we have not been able to host our own National Games. The last time it was hosted in 2015 and since then the authorities have been successfully finding reasons not to host the same, year on year. With such issues plaguing Indian sports, its time for quick remedial action to improve the situation. Does that mean India needs to take some hard-hitting decisions and bring in some much needed sports reforms?
Power Sportz, helmed by Ms Kanthi D Suresh, who also is the Edior-in-Chief of the channel, on its flagship program, ‘Talking Turkey with Kanthi’ aired on Power Sportz TV(powersportz.tv), Ms Kanthi D Suresh, took up this pertinent issue and brought on an elite panel of Senior Bureaucrats who have been associated with Indian Sports, to discuss the same.
Encouraging youngsters to take up sports as a career and in return, the Government providing a secured job to the players is one of the best reforms. We must regulate the functioning of the recognized bodies affiliated to the IOA, since they are the ones helping to build the atmosphere of sports in India., said Mr. Ashok Khemka, Principal Secretary for Sports Policies, Haryana, talking about his views on the changes required in Indian Sports.
There is a need to decentralize Sports and put more onus on the States to develop, promote various sports among the youngsters. The creation of an All India Sports Regulatory Body is another key step, which will be required in the coming years, to promote the growth of sports, while simultaneously ensuring seamless, transparent and ethical practices within sports associations.
Mr. R. S. Dalal, Former DGP, Haryana on the growth of sports said that proper elections and new bodies are important, The district bodies and state bodies are all fake and being controlled by a few people in power. We need a major overhaul in Indian Sports which will clean up all associations and organizations. Proper fair elections and the right to choose the representatives of a particular committee is a solid reform that we must get into action.
Firstly career guarantee for sportsmen of a certain stature, secondly professional management in sports and thirdly scientific training facilities for the players are some of the important reforms which are required to promote the growth of sports in India, said Ashok Kumar, DGP, Uttrakhand the implementation of the most important reform for Sports in India
A sport is not a lifelong career and hence a guarantee of a job is a must for any sportsperson. We cannot keep out all the Bureaucrats from sports since not every International sportsperson can be a good administrator and the presence of a bureaucrat in a body can help process government related policies much more effectively. There are policies for sports at all levels but none of the bodies have a proper framework to supervise the body and there is certainly a need to have a regulatory body in place. The whole show is now available on Power Sports TV.
