SRINAGAR Incessant rainfall disrupted normal life in Kashmir Valley including in this summer capital of the state even as strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed on Thursday.
The rainfall caused water logging in many areas while traffic movement was disrupted. Motorists complained of water logging causing delay in their journey and commuters faced myriad issues while travelling.
A meteorological department official told GNS Srinagar recorded maximum of 5.5r degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 0.6 Degrees Celsius while it had 8.8mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 8:30 a.m.
Gulmarg, the famous ski-resort in north Kashmir, massed one foot of fresh snow and recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius while the famous health resort of Pahalgam witnessed 23.8mm of rain and registered a minimum of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius and saw snowfall of 11 centimetres, he said.
The official said that Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir saw 22.5mm of rainfall and recorded a low of 1.2 degrees Celsius while the mercury settled at 1.0 degrees Celsius in Kokernag town, also in south Kashmir.
Meanwhile, amid fresh snowfall in Banihal and landslides from Ramsoo to Ramban, the highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with outside world, remained closed for traffic on Thursday and according to authorities decided to allow only stranded vehicles towards Srinagar on Friday.
Besides snowfall of over one foot, there have been multiple landslides in Ramban to Ramsoo as well as a result of which traffic was halted,” said a traffic department official.
He said that only stranded traffic will be allowed once the thoroughfare was made traffic worthy.
Jammu Srinagar highway was blocked due to landslides and shooting stones at several places between Ramban-Banihal Stretch, subject to fair weather/clearance of road tomorrow on
22.02.2019 only stranded vehicles shall be allowed towards Srinagar, the official added.
