Independence, Freedom, Islamic Republic

Braving massive challenges like wars and sanctions, modern days first Islamic Republic has turned forty on 11th of February. Islamic Republic formed following an Islamic Revolution was the brainchild of a an Islamic mystic and revolutionary Syed Roohullah Musavi, born in a small Iranian village, called Khomein. He later came to be known as Imam Khomeini.
Iran was ruled by a monarch who had trampled upon the political, social and religious rights of Iranians. Shah’s hatred for religion brought people closer to Islam and Imam Khomeini. Khomeini managed to unify the voices of leftists, Islamists, secularists and nationalists against the shah and paved way for a revolution which changed the relationship of Iran with the western world forever. After the revolution a referendum was held among people which saw overwhelming vote in favour of the Islamic Republic. A new constitution was framed with the slogan of Independence, freedom and Islamic Republic as its cornerstone.

World arrogance ganged up and rallied around dictator Saddam Hussein Takriti to demolish the fledgeling Islamic Republic in 1980. The war lasted 8 years but Saddam had to eat a humble pie so had his masters.  Only after a year Imam Khomeini left this world in 1989. Ayatollah Syed Imam passed away and is resting in a grand mausoleum while Saddam’s remains are unknown while Islamic Republic he wanted to destroy holds sway over Iraq with Iranian army protecting it from aggressors.

Iranian diplomacy made 5 world powers to sit on a negotiating table rattling the arrogant lackeys like Zionists and its Arab allies. Trump, who has flouted all laws of decency by abolishing global treaties, like Iran nuclear deal, recognised Jerusalem Al-Quds as Israeli capital by relocating US embassy there is now mobilising lackey Arab leaders with Israel to demonise Iran.

Iran’s commitment to independence has come at a huge cost with problems both at domestic and international level. Domestically a generation of young Iranians, born after the revolution are craving for more freedom and want end of censorship laws and lifting of compulsory hijab laws. In terms of the foreign policy Iran has maintained a Look-East policy. The Islamic Republic has good relations with Russia, China, and India .It also enjoys a good relationship with its neighbours Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. While the US claims that it has been able to isolate Iran from rest of the world, the reality is quite the opposite. Since the Trump administration took office the image of the United States has been irreparably damaged.

Four decades on, Iran is on the crossroads. Those opposed to the Islamic establishment want the slogan of “Death to America” not be heard on the streets of Iran while the religious conservatives see the slogan as a legacy of the revolution. People can love or hate the Islamic regime in Tehran but what remains an established fact is that it has been a serious headache for the United States and its allies in the region. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are all over the region. They are in Iraq and Syria and through proxy in Lebanon and Yemen. While the Trump administration has imposed its harshest sanctions on Iran in its bid to make leaders in Tehran succumb, the din of slogans Independence and freedom is only getting louder.
