SOPORE Army on Tuesday said it was very sad over killing Hakeem-ur-Rehman Sultani, the Hurriyat Conference (G) activist who was murdered by unknown gunmen at Sopore last week. The army also claimed that the Liyaqat Ahmad Lone, who was killed in a gunfight at Handwara with government forces, was involved in the killing of the activist.
Addressing reporters here, Commander of 7 Sector of Army Daram Das Rai on Tuesday evening said that army was very sad over killing Hakeem ur Rehman Sultani, the Hurriyat Conference (G) activist as he left behind 5 daughters.
5 daughters without a father is very sad, he said.
He added: We don’t want to fight against whole Kashmiri brothers but if someone becomes militant like Lone then we have to kill him, he said.
Army commander answering the question said that the increase in the number of recruitments in North Kashmir’ has been marginal. He said that there are attempts to push across the border militant but the security forces at ready and are really helping to make the peaceful environment in North Kashmir.
Let’s not talk about numbers. The numbers may be slightly increased from the previous year.
He said that encounter at Handwara on Tuesday was based on a specific information about the presence of militants in the Galoora village.
The militants came out from the house and tried to escape through an apple orchard and on being challenged, they opened fire and lobbed a grenade on soldiers, he said, adding, In retaliatory fire, two militants were killed. They were later identified as Furkaan Rashid of Langate Handwara and Liyaqat Ahmed Lone form Harwan Sopore and both were from LeT militant outfit. (with inputs from GNS)
