SRINAGAR — Proceedings of Ganga hijacking case against Hashim Qureshi took place at the Special Sessions Court in Srinagar on Saturday.

Defence counsels Riyaz Jan and Riyaz Khawar along with their junior advocates were present in the court. Defence Counsel Riyaz Jan made a forceful one hour and half defence of his client and presented to the court a copy of Delhi Court’s decision in Satnam Singh hijacking case.

Satnam Singh, an Indian citizen had hijacked an Indian aeroplane to Pakistan in 1981 for which crime he was given punishment in Pakistan.

Defence Counsel said that the Delhi court had dismissed the case against Satnam Singh on the basis of double-jeopardy.

The senior advocate placed before the court judgment copies of many more Supreme Court’s double jeopardy cases. The defence counsels also read out the depositions of many witnesses in the case to show that the witnesses had not in particular made any statement that would cast aspersions on Hashim Qureshi. No identification parade ever took place. The advocate read out the depositions of SSP Ramesh Jala, Ghulam Hassan Mir, and Bashir Ahmad Munshi, Satpal Singh, Interrogation office SSP Niyaz Mahmud and other witnesses.

The case was scheduled for next hearing on 11 August. The Court directed the defence counsel to submit their written arguments on the next hearing. Along with this the court gave the exemption to Hashim Qureshi of not presenting himself before the court on account of his health problems and security concerns.
