VITMEE vs. GATE. Which is a Tough Nut to Crack?

The Vellore Institute of Technology conducts VITMEE for admission to its various post graduate courses. The notification for the exam has been released and it shall be conducted on June 2&3. GATE, on the other hand, is a sought after national level entrance examination for admission into post-graduate courses at various universities and institutes all over India.

Although the scope of VITMEE is not the same as compared to GATE yet it is a great option for those seeking admission in M.Tech, MCA and other such postgraduate courses. While both the entrances offer admissions to post-graduation Engineering courses and comprise moderate to high difficulty level, these differ on various parameters.

The level of difficulty

VITMEE has a moderate difficulty level as compared to GATE. Students who have prepared for GATE would find that only revision would be enough for VITMEE exam, as all their preparation is already complete, assuming they had prepared for GATE exam, as the syllabus isn’t different and the difficulty level isn’t higher.

Candidates who were able to qualify GATE examination can easily score a great rank in in VITMEE, according to quite a lot of experts. VITMEE exam focusses more on the basic theoretical part, while GATE requires heavy practice of numerical and theoretical concepts both. Some GATE qualifiers were able to score a below 500 rank, like Quora user Akshay Bhinge, who scored 41.83 in GATE, but was able to score an All India Rank of 337 on VITMEE.

Overall, GATE exam has a higher level of difficulty and requires you to practice a lot, whereas for VITMEE exam you need to study the basic theoretical portions and concepts.

VITMEE Paper Analysis 2017

VITMEE 2017 was a moderate level exam with direct and conceptual questions and seems to have been moderately easy, although many candidates complained that the exam was quite lengthy. All the subjects were of varying difficulties in the technical section. The technical section was also quite a lot tougher compared to the English Communication section. The technical section was time-consuming but easy and there were a lot more conceptual questions than there were numerical based questions. GATE Paper Analysis 2018

GATE 2018 exam was quite a lot easier than its previous iterations. There were a lot more theory based questions and the numerical question were sharp and crisp. Only a few questions were lengthy and there were a lot of questions that did not provide any multiple choice, but rather required the candidate to enter a numeric value using an on-screen virtual keyboard.

General Aptitude: This section has a moderate difficulty level. The English section was fairly easy and presented in a very unique way. While the section was easy according to the experts, most of the students complained that the English section quite tough.

Technical Section: The technical section was moderately difficult and were usually conducted on different days, or at least different shifts.

VITMEE: Expected level of competition in 2018

The level of difficulty is expected to remain low this year as compared to the last year, and the paper is considered to be slightly easier than the last year, hence the cut off should slightly increase from last year in all categories. Although it can’t be said for sure, as the authorities might consider a different approach and increase the level of difficulty, but the probability of such a scenario is difficult.

There is no official figure for how many students attempted the exam, thus the effect of this parameter on the overall competition cannot be calculated, although it is a trend that the number of graduates increase every year, thus the potential aspirants for VITMEE increase every year by a significant number.

GATE which is a national level entrance examination and is more difficult as compared to VITMEE, it provides admission to candidates into all the prestigious colleges at graduate level. IITs, NITs, etc. All accept GATE score for admission into their Master’s programs. Apart from that, various Public Sector Undertakings, or PSUs, offer job opportunities based on the candidate’s GATE score. Thus, with GATE examination, candidates with a good score can choose between either taking up a great job or enrolling in great program.
