GulmargWinter Games Federation of India (WGFI) in association with Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) celebrated world snow day in Gulmarg on Monday
World snow day is celebrated all over the world to bring children to snow and to promote snow sports in our future generations. IISM under the ministry of tourism celebrates world snow day every year. This year approximately 90 childrens from Kashmir and many from other parts of the country participated for the celebration under IISM Gulmarg. Institute organized free skiing training for all the participants. Many children were accompanied by their parents who were also given exposure to snow sports.
J S Dhillon, director of IISM welcomed the children and parents and briefed them about the significance of world snow day. He said many children are interested to pursue snow sports but there is a huge gap in the knowledge on the various snow sports facilities available in the country. He said Gulmarg is a world renowned snow sports destination but awareness amongst the children & environment is very low including the people from Kashmir itself.
He also explained the huge impact of global warming on the snow sports & requested all stake holders to comply with the environment friendly norms to save our snow areas. He said that Gulmarg used to have 10-15 feet of snow 3 decades back & now it is not even 3 feet of snow in Gulmarg due to global warming.
All children & parents were served free meals during the celebration. It is a very good initiative of the institute to bring awareness amongst the young generation about the snow sports in our country especially in Kashmir. World snow day is celebrated in January third weak every year all over the world under the patronage of international ski federation (FIS).
