Srinagar: As bone chilling temperatures in Kashmir Valley are taking a toll across the state, the higher education department is yet to come out with the announcement of declaring winter break for colleges leaving thousands of students in lurch.

Reports inform that there has been no communication sent to degree colleges in Kashmir Division over the declaration of winter break and that the colleges have been asked to function as per the routine. “It s natural that the winter break should have been announced but the government is indecisive about this and no decision so far has been taken in this regard,” says an official in the higher education department.

When contacted, Commissioner Secretary Education, Asgar Samoon said we have not taken any decision over the issue.

“How could the government be non- serious over the issue,” said Aamir Mukhtar a student. “The heavy snowfall across Kashmir has thrown normal life out of gear and the government on the other hand wants us to leave early from out homes and report to college. Such bizarre decisions were never witnessed in the state ever.”

Earlier, the Director Technical Education cancelled the winter vacation in all the government and private polytechnic colleges of Jammu and Kashmir. The move is already being questioned by the state’s civil society.
