SrinagarDespite a law in place asking public transport owners to reserve first eight seats for women and physically challenged people in buses, there is no respite for travellers.
I was literally distressed to see a woman passenger with an infant in her lap and nobody in the bus bothered to offer her a seat, said a student Farheena.
There was not even a single woman sitting on the first eight seats reserved for them, she added.
Traffic police should take strict action against those who dont follow the rules. It is really difficult for a woman to ask a man to vacate the reserved seat, said Tanveera, a teacher.
They dont understand this and retaliate in a very bad manner Tanveera added.
SSP Traffic, Tahir Saleem said, at least 90 drivers of buses and minibuses have been challaned between December 6 and 15 for violating the law.
We have collected Rs 16700 as fine so far and we are continuously tracking those violators and 630 challans have been registered against the violators till now, SSP added.
