SrinagarThe Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Monday directed authorities to continue with anti-polythene drive in ecologically fragile environment of Pahalgam in south Kashmir.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of the court headed by Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir also Pahalgam Development Department and other to appoint a technical expert for supervising the repair or renovation of any structure in and around the resort.
To make the resort polythene free, the PDA informed that it has seized 54 kg of polythene and the court appreciated that and directed it to continue with the drive. The authorities have also imposed fine on those dealing in polythene and handed over the seized polythene material to Pollution Control Board for its disposal.
About the checking of hotels by Pollution Control Board whether these hotels do have STPs functional, a division bench of the court comprising Justice Mohammad YAqoob Mir and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey informed that all the 42 hotels in the resort have been visited by PCB and out of them, 24 with capacity of 20 rooms do have their own STPs and are functioning properly. However, the PCB said hotels with 19 rooms do not require the same formality (STP) as the previous orders.
With regard to demarcation of adjoining villages of the resort, Chief town planner submitted that he has received the revenue records from the deputy Commissioner concerned three days ago and sought some time for the follow up action.
The court was hearing the PIL filed by Peoples Welfare Organization Pahalgam through advocate Parvez Imroz. It essentially seeks directions for the Protection of ecologically fragile environs of Pahalgam from further destruction and damage.
