SrinagarSrinagar-Leh Strategic highway, the only surface link between Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, was today officially closed for winter months, ahead of weather advisory .
The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed for winter months, a traffic police official said.
Met office has issued an advisory predicting moderate to heavy snowfall in Kashmir and Ladakh regions and rains in plains of the state for three days beginning December 11, 2017.
The 434-km Srinagar-leh highway, usually remains closed for vehicular traffic for at least six months during winter when it attracts heavy snowfall. The border roads organization (BRO) which maintains the road, has reduced the closure period of the highway by at least two months.
Nearly 12,000 feet high Zojila, 130 kms from here, on the Highway attracts heaviest snowfall during winter and closes the strategic highway which serves as a life line for army as well as civil population.
However, the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu highway and historic Mughal road, both connecting Kashmir with Jammu, is open for traffic , sources said.
Meanwhile, authorities across the Kashmir valley have geared up all resources to meet any challenge following prediction of moderate to heavy rain and snow in the state from Monday for next few days.
