SrinagarKashmir is being supplied with substandard rice supply from Punjab and nearly 100 trucks are lying in various godowns of the Valley ready for unloading, insiders in Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs have told a local news agency.
The insiders said that truckloads of substandard rice are being transported to Kashmir from Punjab mills after being purchased at meagre price in Chhattisgarh. The rice is rejected but it is being sent to Kashmir. There is deep-rooted nexus between some Food Corporation of India officers and transporters. The standard rice is being sold in private and the substandard is transported here, they alleged.
The insiders revealed at present, 100 trucks carrying substandard rice are lying in private godowns at Budgam, Sangrama, Shilwat Sumbal, FCI Srinagar and FCI Lethpora.
A truck bearing registration number JK002Q 5593 came to New Store Srinagar for unloading from Shilwat Sumbal, they said, adding: the rice is completely substandard and hazardous to health.
The insiders said that despite being brought into the notice of officials, no action has been taken in this regard.
Recently, the matter was brought into the notice of Area Manager but nothing was done, they said.
Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Tribal Affairs, Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali could not be contacted for comment.
Sahib is busy, will be available after few hours, responded a caller who picked up the ministers personal number this evening. –GNS
