Protest against Beacon for depriving labourers of work in winters

Srinagar—Scores of labourers protested against Beacon authorities outside their headquarters located in Rangreth area in the outskirts of Srinagar city on Thursday.

Casual Paid Labourers who work for Beacon round the year alleged that authorities have stopped providing them work with the onset of the winter.

They said during other seasons Beacon use them but this year in winters majority of them are being asked to leave the headquarters.

“If the budget is low then how come Beacon officers avail the services of outside state labourers. We are recognized work force but are being deprived of work,” the protesters said adding the Beacon officers are using outside labourers for their personal tasks.

The protesting labourers chanted slogans against Beacon authorities.

They said they are associated with Beacon from past 2 decades and it is for the first time they are being deprived of work in winters.

“Some of us are carpenters, painters, masons who work with Beacon throughout year, but now they want us out to pave way for outside labourers.”

Chief Engineer Beacon couldn’t be contacted while a lower rung official declined to comment on the issue. (CNS)
