SrinagarThousands of fish washed ashore the Jhelum river in Srinagar on Sunday leading to panic among residents, but the district administration said most of the fish were not dead suggesting that the oxygen content in the water could be low.
Thousands of fish were seen floating on the surface of the river at several places, officials said.
The incident led to panic and wild speculation that the river water could have been poisoned. Many people were seen recording the incident on their mobile phones.
The incident comes amid ongoing chaos over the mysterious braid-chopping incidents.
Soon after the news of fish floating on Jehlum surface went viral on social media administration issued a statement calling for calm and urged people not to panic. They have collected water samples and sent them for tests.
“We have taken water samples as well as the samples of fish. Most of the fish washed up ashore are not dead suggesting that the oxygen content in the river water could be low,” District Magistrate, Srinagar, Abid Rasheed Shah said.
The fish floated on a 2.5 km stretch of Jhelum in the old city area of Safa Kadal, prompting people to crowd the banks to watch the unusual phenomenon.
Kashmirs fisheries department prima facie rejected any case of poisoning.
The fish were alive but docile and only a single species Kashmirs indigenous specie Schizothorax or Kashir fish washed ashore. If there was poisoning, every type of fish would have been affected, said M M Wani, fisheries deputy director, central Kashmir was quoted as saying.
