Fifty years ago, India was highly plagued by casteism, as is evident from incidents archived in history. Whether it took the form of Dalits not being allowed inside places of worship, lower castes denied the right to education or Dalit women forced to keep their upper bodies uncovered casteism was and is a huge blot on Indian culture
At present, the situation has definitely changed for the better. As is evident through ,various factors such as a larger number of people from lower castes gaining literacy and education over the years or implementation of laws demolishing the differences in people.. Nevertheless, there have been changes and we must praise the reservation system for paving a way for societys underprivileged to get a decent shot at life, but does the reservation system needs to be modified now? We did not have the same problems or the same magnitude of problems we had back when this bill enacting reservation was passed. Shouldnt the bill change along with the changing problems of our society?
The kind of reservation system our government follows does nothing but divide the society into different sections .Today when a student applies for admission in a University, the admission forms are filled with questions like Are you SC/ST or OBC or general category. A category cannot decide whether he is eligible for admission or not. There are many economically worse of children of forward classes to whom the benefits of this reservation system do not reach.
Reservation system in India has led to creation of workforce which is not capable enough to compete at global level. Nation needs people for growth and development but reservation is adding undeserving candidates as well. Is it not unfair 0n part of meritorious students? Or when it comes to prestigious jobs like doctors engineers and administrative officers is it right to sacrifice the intelligence and hardwork for reservation.
This system has allowed the incapable people to acquire jobs in noble fields and are constantly posing an invisible threat to the society. Meritorious people who become the scapegoat of this system could have done a lot better than these people in each of their respective fields. We are heading toward the time where we might be treated by not so competent doctors , our infrastructure development may be in the hands of incompetent engineers , all thanks to reservation system. To further worsen the problems of open merit candidates the extent of the benefits which the reserved candidates enjoy have no limits from entrance examination till promotions once appointed in different government sectors.
There was a quota system in US as well, but it was abolished long ago . This doesn’t mean they are not working for underprivileged in their society. For admission and appointments purposes people from underprivileged classes are given some extra points but not a certain number of seats .So , though the government is helping the needy without doing injustice to general category applicants.
Is it not the right time for government to scrape off the reservation system or at least modify the existing system. Should not the system be available with onetime benefit only and the scale for reservation be economics and not caste ? The government must come up with new policies for the improvement of the underprivileged classes. The system if continued is going to b a menace for the society though invisible and evolving as of now.
