SrinagarDefence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday arrived in Valley on her maiden visit to review security and during which she held meetings with army commanders and also called upon Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
Accompanied by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Bipin Rawat, the Defence Minister was received by Northern Army Commander Lt General D Anbu and the Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen J S Sandhu. Army spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said in a statement issued to news agency GNS that the Defence Minister visited the forward areas and was briefed about the robust counter infiltration posture along the Line of Control.
The Defence Minister was subsequently briefed by the Army Commander in Badami Bagh Cantonment on the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and was given an overview of the counter infiltration and counter terrorist operations undertaken in the recent past, Col Kalia said.
She appreciated the effectiveness of the intelligence and operational grids and commended the troops for the excellent operational successes, which had contributed significantly towards a secure environment in the State, the Army spokesperson said.
The Defence Minister complimented the commanders for the high level of synergy achieved with the JKP and CAPF. The Defence Minister this evening called upon Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti here and discussed the prevailing security situation with both of them. Army spokesperson said that the Defence Minister would stay in Srinagar overnight and will fly to Siachen tomorrow.
