Gurez, a feast for the eyes


For a traveller, the lovely valley of Gurez is the essence of Switzerland. It sits picture-perfect on the river Kishenganga, below a beautiful panorama of the mighty Himalayas. Located at about 86 kms from Bandipore and 123 kms from Srinagar in North Kashmir, Gurez’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on planet Earth. Its mesmerizing landscape remains spectacular be it spring, summer, fall or winter. During summer, the lush pastures allure you. In winter, it offers a magnificent view of snow-capped Himalayas on the horizon. and the dreamy villages with roofs of houses covered in snow make for heart-warming views. In the warmer months, it is blessed with sunshine.

Of all of Kashmir, it’s Gurez that’s most charming. It’s so picturesque, the peaks all around the valley, towering into the clouds, the shimmering waters of the Kishenganga ,,the banks of the river heavily wooded with trees … the idyllic mountain meadows nestled below soaring peaks … villages lined with log wood houses that have changed little over time …… There’s a feel of Europe here.

It’s lush meadows are dotted with wild flowers. One would love the scent of the green floating in the air. The Himalayan air resonates with the chirping of birds and the clang of cow bells. In summer, nomadic shepherds arrive in the highlands from other parts of Kashmir to graze their sheep.

Culturally, Gurez has much to offer. It’s known for rural customs and traditions as well as cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances. Recreational activities range from trout fishing, camping to hiking on the mountains. Travellers can find the valley an inviting place to stroll. It’s ideal for a variety of sports such as rafting, skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering etc.

Gurez has unique traditions that’s alive to this day. Its various customs and folk traditions celebrate its rich cultural heritage.

The festival is a fun event for the whole family. It’s a treat for all ages. It offers plenty for kids as well as adults. Attractions range from cultural events to adventure sports.
