2 Soldiers Among 4 Killed Near LoC

Srinagar: Two soldiers and two suspected militants were killed as troops foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday.

Sources said a suspicious movement was observed by the army along the LoC in Nowgam sector, 90 km from here, and an operation was launched. “As a group of heavily armed militants was attempting to infiltrate, the troops challenged them.

Infiltrators responded with heavy fire and in the ensuing fire fight two soldiers were killed while army neutralized equal number of infiltrating militants,” they said and the area has been cordoned off as the operation was in progress.

The Army confirmed the death of two militants and two soldiers in the encounter. Defence Spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said Friday afternoon that the encounter was going on. The identity of the slain militants and soldiers could not be established immediately.

Mine Blast Injures Soldier

An army jawan suffered a fracture in his foot in a landmine blast along LoC in Pooch district.

“A soldier accidentally stepped on a drifted mine while on routine patrolling along the LoC in Mendhar sector, resulting in a blast last night,” an army officer said today.

The mine had drifted due to rain. The soldier was wearing mine protected shoes, he said, adding that the soldier has suffered a heal fracture.

He was immediately evacuated and was shifted today to Udhampur Command hospital for treatment.
