IGNOU Facilitates Top Kashmiri Students With Gold Medals


New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University conducted its 30th Convocation at the Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC), IGNOU campus in Maidan Garhi, New Delhion April 13, 2017. 208866 students who had completed their academic programmes in December, 2015 and June, 2016 term-end-examinations were eligible for the award of degrees/diplomas/certificates in this Convocation.

The main function of the Convocation was held at IGNOU Headquarters and simultaneously at all the IGNOU Regional Centres through Tele-conferencing mode. The event was attended by Minister of State for Higher Education Mahendra Nath Pandey as the guest of honour.

The convocation begun at 3 pm in which students from more than 200 courses were presented with 120 PhDs, 10 MPhils and 66 gold medals. The University also presented five cash prices to meritorious students.

The IGNOU Regional Centre in Srinagar was established in1999 with a view to provide the higher education to the masses of Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil. Regional Centre Srinagar has enrolled over 1 lac learners till date and has emerged as one ofthe largest centre among the Regional Centres across the country.Presently RC Srinagar offers more than 250 programmes with Certificates, Diplomas, Advance diplomas, PG diplomas, Bachelors and Masters in various disciplines.

At the 30th convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) held at Government College of Education Srinagar on Thursday April 13, 2017 more than 10,000 students from all over Kashmir were awarded diplomas and degrees in 95 different programs.

Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir was the guest of honour and Prof. Me’rajUd Din Mir, Vice Chancellor; Central University of Kashmir presided over the function.

The degrees and diplomas were handed over to the students by Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi.

Among these 2 Kashmiri students received gold medals by IGNOU for topping at all-India level.

StudentsIshfaq Ahmad Banday from Budgam for MA Political Science and Reyaz Ahmad Mir from Pahalgam for Diploma in Tourism Studiesreceived gold medals for topping IGNOU programmes at university level for which they were felicitated during the convocation.

Addressing the gathering of students, Andrabi said that distance learning offers a great scope for learning and is gradually gaining an edge over formal education.

“I am optimistic that distance learning is becoming more popular and famous. Distance education has gained an edge over formal education in terms of utility and quality. I am sure that degrees in varied subjects can be offered to students through distance learning in days to come.” Prof Andrabi said.

Mirza Nehal Ahmad Baig, Regional Director of IGNOU said around 10,518 students received their degree and diploma certificates across 95 programmes of study. “Overall, a total of 2 lakh students across the country are being awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates in the 30th Convocation including MPhil and PhD,” Baig said.
