SRINAGAR: The alarming increase in the number of stray dogs in Gund and adjoining areas of district Ganderbal in central Kashmir is posing threat to the inhabitants.

Inhabitants alleged that the authorities are doing nothing to control the menace. They said that the packs of dogs are seen on the prowl at various areas of the district including busy markets of Kangan, Cherwan, Padabal and Ganiwan areas.

Dogs are posing a grave threat to the life of people, especially children and elderly.

They said it has become difficult during morning and evening hours to move at ease.

Residents in Padabal Cherwan alleged that dogs are being ferried from different areas of district and set free in the villages. While all residents were affected by the menace, children in the town have been worst affected.

Some residents also alleged that the mysterious rise in dog population was due to their transportation from urban areas during night hours there.

Local resident Afrooza said that “we are living under threat due to the dog menace; we cannot move freely on roads and go to mosque during wee hours”.

Another local Abdul Rasheed said that our school going children are vulnerable to attacks by stray dogs which force us at times to stop them from attending school.

Meanwhile the residents of Kangan have appealed the concerned authorities to tackle the menace at an earliest for the convenience of the people.
