‘Cong should do soul searching’

New Delhi: Government Tuesday sought to blame the Congress for low turnout of voters in the recently held bypoll for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency and said the incumbent regime of Narendra Modi is suffering “results of past mistakes of the Congress” in the Valley.

“Congress should do the soul searching. When they do it, they will realise the lapses they have been doing right from the days of country’s first Prime Minister (Pt Jawaharlal Nehru),” Minister for State in PMO Jitendra Singh told UNI outside Parliament premises.

Asked to comment on what were the factors for low voter turnout in the bypoll for Srinagar, the Minister said, “there could be many factors”.

“There have been results of accumulative mistakes….series of mistakes,” he said vis-a-vis the issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
“We are suffering the results of those series of mistakes today,” he said.

The Congress has targeted the PDP-BJP alliance government in Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly mishandling the situation resulting in low turnout of voters for Srinagar bypoll.

“Decades of hard work to build trust in the democratic process in Kashmir reversed in less than three years by the BJP government,” Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has said.
