Pause And Think

Attractive natural geography and mesmerizing beauty of Kashmir has made its people victims of foreign invaders and their rapacity and tyranny from centuries in the past down to present day. Owing to this very region India and Pakistan are at loggerheads for last seventy years and they have made the lives of the people of Kashmir virtual hell for them. Millions of people are not able to breathe freely owing to the acrimony between the two countries and thousands of people, old, women and children have been killed in the process. They are not ready to take recourse to justice and fair deal and take into account the aspirations of the people in finding a lasting solution to the problem. In the name of dialogue big leaders have kept the problem alive for seventy long years. They believe that time will wear out the people and the issue will be resolved automatically.

New Delhi used Sheikh Abdullah, Bakhshi, Sadiq, Qasim, Mufti and now Mehbooba to befool Kashmiris. India placed billions of rupees at their disposal which never reached ordinary Kashmiri. The so-called mainstream politicians kept their Delhi masters in  a happy mood and made them fish out billions of rupees. Even when out of power they continued to sing about Kashmir issue and dialogue and plebiscite thereby strengthening the role of separatists. Its outstanding proof is of Mufti Mahbooba visiting the militants at their homes and garnering their support by shedding false tears of sympathy. Today Farooq Abdullah has stepped into her shoes labelling militants as the “soldiers of freedom fight”.

Not only this, during the futile wanderings of Sheikh Abdullah, Delhi rulers managed to make religious parties fight elections. Tallest among separatists of today also participated in those elections. But Delhi rulers got nothing except forcible occupation of the land? Those whom they catapulted into power framed new rules only to subjugate the people.

About Azad Kashmir, Pakistani army engaged them in fomenting turmoil on this part of Kashmir and making Kashmiris fodder for the Indian guns. To make them their loyalists, Pakistan army gave Kashmiris not only huge money but also used the option of intimidation and threat. Pakistani army used money and also the religious card to align Kashmiris with them. Jamaati Islami is foremost among them which at one point of time Delhi rulers had strengthened against Sheikh Abdullah and secular parties.

Today police force and their families are subjected to intimidation. Anarchy prevails on roads. Nobody feels his honour is safe. Valley is heading towards massive civil war.

After these introductory remarks we come to the present crisis. Will militants be saved from army’s retaliatory action in a situation of encounter? We must address this important question keeping in mind international law. Can stone pelters change the balance between the army and a few gun carrying militants engaged in encounters? When you throw stones on one of the two warring parties, obviously you become partner in the fight. Naturally, you will have to face the bullets.

In many fights one fighting group has dragged unarmed people in front of the attacking platoons to use them as human shield. They want the other group to stop their attack. Many times exit space is given by the armed forces to these human shield people to escape the scene. A few days ago US troops made about 300 such human shield people the victims of bombardment in the fighting in Mosul. Among the killed were about a hundred children.  In the light of this event no country in the world will approve intervention by stone pelters in encounters in Kashmir. At best restraint will be advised.  Can we get even a single inch of land evacuated by the Indian troops by stone pelting strategy?

We have given more than 90000 guns in the hands of Indian troops and we got equal number of people martyred in the fight. Thousands have gone to jails. We sent more than four lakh Kashmiris on forced exile from their motherland. How many women we allowed to get molested?

The parents of the martyrs and victims ask the question what was achieved by making such large scale sacrifices. What did the towering leaders of the movement win for the people after twenty seven years of struggle?  Did any country of the world come to our support during last twenty seven years? Did any country raise our issue in the United Nations? No country including Muslim countries raised voice against the use of pellet gun that blinds the youth. Does not the conscience of big separatist leaders and Hurriyat stalwarts prick them for what they achieved for the nation? Is it not the responsibility of our intellectuals to raise the question why we are allowing our generation to become the target of bullets the way things are going?

We advocated for non violent movement and opposed the use of violence and gun. We said the age of violence is over and objectives can be achieved only through non violence and through civil disobedience. Some rallies organized along with violence are not acceptable to the world as non violent struggle. We need video and photo camera not the gun.

We must analyse the twenty seven year long struggle objectively. We shall have to decide what form our struggle should take. We shall have to declare those people as enemies of our freedom struggle who raise slogans for Pakistan, hoist flags of Pakistan and the ISIS. By doing these things our movement is being dubbed as extremist.

We must analyse the twenty seven year long struggle objectively. We shall have to decide in what form this struggle is to be carried forward. We shall have to declare those people as enemies of our freedom struggle who raise slogans of Pakistan, flutter flags of Pakistan and ISIS. By doing these things our movement will be dubbed as extremist movement. If this is allowed to continue then we shall be lost for unknown number of years. We need to save the lives of our youth. We should reject those doing business on the dead bodies of our youth. We shall lay foundation for free debate of our problems.

While I was about to conclude this article, the news came that Salah-ud-Din, and Jamati Islami leaders have appealed for strike in protest against opening of nine kilometre long Chenani-Nashri tunnel. I thought if the independence movement stalwarts like Gandhi, Jinnah and Nehru had opposed the British from building thousands of miles of railway lines, roads, power houses and factories, and canals, India and Pakistan would have still been in the 15th century and not in 21st century.

These so-called leaders of Kashmir have no agenda other than that of strike calls. This is what we say everybody’s imagination is in line with his courage. I want to tell the people who vote for the martyrdom of the children of other people not their own, and those who raise slogans of accession to the neighbouring country; Occasionally think how sons grow up?(
