State Winter Games-2017:Bilal, Afreena, Firdous script title triumphs in senior events

SRINAGAR: Bilal Ahmad Sheikh emerged as the winner of Men’s (senior) Alpine Skiing category in the State Winter Games-2017 that concluded Tuesday at Gulmarg. Afreena walked away with the title in the women’s category with her being the only participant in the genre.

According to the statement issued by the organisers, thirteen races were held on the concluding day of the event that saw more than 140 boys and girls from different districts of the state vying for the glory.

Competitions in Slalom race of Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding were held under the supervision of Dhanbahadur.

Firdous Ahmad Sheikh bagged the first position in Snowboarding (Senior Category) while Mehraj-ud-Din Khan scripted title win the junior category.

The 10 km Nordic Skiing race was held under the supervision of Olympian Nadeem Ahmad.

 MLA Tangmarg and President Winter Games Association of J&K-organisers of the event-Mohammad Abass Wani and Malik Riyaz Ahmad General Manager J&K Cable Car Corporation were in attendance in the presentation ceremony.

Abbas claimed  that the efforts of the Association are being made to host National Junior Alpine Ski Championship at Gulmarg from April 10.

 He expressed his gratitude to J&K State Sports Council, Tourism Department, J&K Cable Car Corporation, High Altitude Warfare School and Gulmarg Development Authority for extending their full support to make the endeavor of WGAJK a grand success.

He further informed that the association conducted number of activities this winter and kept the youth engaged for a longer period. Those boys and girls who performed exceptionally well were selected for future National level Coaching camps and championships.
