3rd Day, 3rd Attack; 1 CRPF Jawan Killed


SRINAGAR: In the third attack on security forces at Srinagar in three days, militants on Monday attacked a CRPF vehicle at Pantha Chowk area on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, killing one paramilitary jawan, while injuring five other personnel. A passerby girl was also injured in the shootout.

An officer of CRPF said that the paramilitary personnel were coming from Jammu to Srinagar in TATA 407 and other public transport buses for election duty when they came under attack.

He said one of the vehicles was targeted by militants  near Sempora, Pantha Chowk, resulting in injuries to six CRPF men. All the injured personnel were rushed to Army’s 92 Base Hospital at nearby Badami Bagh Cantonment.

One of the critically injured jawans, identified as Head Constable Basappa of 96 bn CRPF succumbed to injuries at the army hospital.

The injured CRPF men were identified as Constable Bhoor Singh Meena, Head Constable Devdas Kawle, Constable Bharat Bharti, Constable Rambabu and Constable Dwarka Prasad.

The doctors have termed condition of one of the injured jawan as critical.

A 10 year old school girl, identified as Zainab, resident of Drangbal, Pampore was hit by a bullet in her leg during the shoot out. Zainab, a student of DPS, was evacuated to Bone and Joints Hospital where doctors in the evening described her condition as stable.

CRPF spokesman in Srinagar Rajesh Yadav said that militants fired from automatic weapons towards a moving CRPF vehicle at Sempora, Pantha Chowk area.The fire was returned by the paramilitary personnel and the exchange of fire continued for some minutes.

Soon after the attack, police and SOG, army and CRPF arrived on the spot and sealed the entire area. They also stopped movement of vehicles for some time. However no one was arrested.

Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility of the attack and announced prize for its commander Abu Musa for his role in the attack.

The Monday’s attack is the third attack in the city in just three days which is going for by-elections on April 9 for Lok Sabha seat.

About 200 additional CRPF companies have been rushed to Kashmir to perform election duty for bypolls to two parliamentary seats in the Valley.

On Saturday, three army men were injured when militants attacked their convoy near JVC Hospital, Bemina on Srinagar bypass.

On Sunday, one policeman was killed and 10 government forces personnel were injured at Nowhatta when militants hurled a grenade on police and CRPF stationed there.

J&K Director General of Police S P Vaid said additional security measures would be put in place in Srinagar after strikes by militants.

He said the security apparatus has been intensified after the militant attacks.

The bypolls for Srinagar Lok Sabha seat will be held on April 9.

Hizb owns Nowhatta grenade attack

 Militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility of Nowhatta attack in which a police constable Shameem Ahmed of Gurez Bandipore was killed and 10 CRPF personnel were injured.

 “The attack was carried out by the militants belonging to our outfit. We have already declared that we will strike at any time, any place to show our presence across State,” Operational Spokesperson Burhanduddin told news agency CNS over phone.

Pertinently, a grenade was lobbed on a joint police and CRPF party at Nowhatta on Sunday evening leaving three CRPF men and seven policemen injured while a young cop lost his life.
