SRINAGAR: Transparency International India (TII) on Tuesday awarded two reputed journalists from Kashmir Valley for their mark in reporting from Valley.
The TII conferred the awards during a conference on Combating Corruption through Tools of Good-Governance held here at IMPA in collaboration with J&K RTI Movement and School for Rural Development and Environment (SRDE) where Justice (Retd) Bashir Ahmad Kirmani and the TII head, Rama Nath Jha, and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Venkatesh Nayak felicitated the winners.
Moazum Mohammad, who works as Bureau Chief for the Kashmir Reader was awarded in appreciation of his work on public issues especially RTI, corruption and erstwhile Tosamaidan fire range.
The award noted that Moazum was the first scribe to report about Tosamaidan issue in 2010.
Samaan Lateef, who is a staffer with The Tribune, was awarded for his fearless reporting on corruption and health sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
During his career, Samaan Lateef has covered health and corruption related cases for reputed newspapers including The Tribune, Greater Kashmir, The Pioneer.
The award said that Samaan Lateef was the first journalist to report on eye epidemic in 2010 summer civil uprising when 26 civilians were shot in eyes by men in uniform. Besides, he has been highlighting the advancements made by the Kashmir-based doctors in the field of medicine.
It added that Samaan is the first news reporter who has focused on healthcare in rural Kashmir. After his sustained campaign, the health department recently announced that the referral of patients from rural areas to tertiary care hospitals in Srinagar has gone down by 70 percent, it claimed.
He has also won the best documentary award on Child Labour in 2009 at Bangalore.
